BN 4257

BN C425 4257 was built by Alco as the SP&S 317 in August 1965. It was the last of an eight unit order numbered 310-317 and all worked out of the SP&S shops at Vancouver, WA.

After the 1970 BN merger the SP&S 317 was renumbered BN 4257 and remained assigned to Vancouver, WA. My notes say I first saw the BN 4257 on 3-27-71 on an extra north at Auburn, WA led by BN 748/4100/4257 (F7A/FA1/C425)

There is a B&W photo of the 4257 on rrpictiurearchives showing it still wearing SP&S paint in 1972.

I took my first slide of the 4257 at Interbay, WA on 1-26-77, a rear end roster with it showing some wear, and pretty dirty too!

A few months later on 3-30-77 I caught it leading train #139 through Kent, WA with units 4257/2086/2500/2537/4361 up front. (C425/GP38-2/GP35/GP35/C636)

On 10-2-78 I photographed the 4257 at the ex-NP Auburn, WA locomotive facility waiting for some mechanical work to be done to it.

The end of service on the BN was getting close for the 4257. It went into storage late in 1979 at Portland, OR where I photographed it on 5-3-80 with other stored BN Alcos.

It was officially retired in August of 1980. Like many of the other BN C425's it found a new home with the Kansas based KYLE railroad. But I have been unable to find any images of the 4257 in service on the KYLE so it may have been a parts source and likely was scrapped long ago.
