BN 5606

NP 2506 was part of an order of 15 GE U25C's delivered in June-July of 1964 numbered 2500-2514. They went right into the transcontinental pool after delivery.

In looking at my notes for the NP 2506 it was at Auburn, WA on 3-28-70 when I first saw it, less than a month after the BN merger. The lashup was CBQ 576/NP 2514/NP 2506/NP 7002D (U28C/2 U25C/F9A)

The NP 2506 was renumbered BN 5606 soon after the merger. By the early part of 1971 the U25C's and U28C's had all disappeared from the west coast with most of them being assigned to the Minneapolis/St Paul area.

It wasn't until 1979 that I finally saw, and photographed the BN 5606 at Interbay in Seattle. The U-boats were back in the general freight pool for one last stand. Here is U25C 5606 at Interbay on 7-16-79.

The red warning light on the nose has been removed but at least the extra cab windows are still there. Hard to believe under all that green paint is NP U25C 2506.

The U-boats did not last much longer. The 5606 was officially retired in March of 1981. (probably stored long before that) It was eventually cut up for scrap.
