BN 170

BN SW1200 170 was built by EMD as the NP 170 as part of an eight unit order numbered 170-177 in January of 1958. These eight were the last SW1200's that the NP ordered and the 170 was assigned to the St Paul Division. rrpicturearchives has a photo of the NP 170 at Minneapolis taken in 1968.

After the BN merger the NP 170 was relettered BN 170 keeping it's NP number as did the other seven SW1200's from the last order. The 170 (and the 171) were assigned to Mississippi St shops for maintenance. It was later repainted BN green and continued to work the eastern end of the former NP system

I never did see the 170 in any of my travels but I did purchase a slide of the BN 170 on eBay taken in Duluth, MN 6-20-87.

The BN 170 lasted five more years until March 1992 when it was retired. It was reported to have been sold to Nucor Steel but no photos of it has ever surfaced.
