BN 4193
BN 4193 was built in June of 1960 by Alco as the NP 913, part of the final group of RS11's numbered 912-917 the NP purchased and were equipped with dynamic brakes. These were also the last Alcos purchased by the NP. They were assigned to the St Paul Division.
Here is a photo of the NP 913 at Duluth, MN in early 1970 from rrpicturearchives:
After the BN merger in March 1970 all of the ex-NP's Alcos were transferred west to Vancouver, WA for assignment along with the ex-SP&S Alcos already there. The NP 913 was then renumbered to BN 4193.
The first time that I saw the BN 4193 was 3-7-71 at Seattle, WA on a southbound freight led by 4100/4122/4193 (FA1/FA1/RS11) The 4192 was still in NP paint.
Kevin Piper has a photo of the BN 4193 taken 5-25-71 at Klamath Falls, OR in his collection.
Photographer unknown
The 4193 was later painted green and worked the western part of the system until placed in storage at Portland OR where I photograph it on 5-3-80.
The 4193 was retired by the BN in August 1980. It was then sold to the Kankakee, Beverville and Southern and numbered KBSR 318.
Here is a nice photo of the 318 working at Iroquois Jct, IL in 1993:
I made a trip back to the area 8-8-97 hoping to photograph the 318 in service but by the time I got there the ex-NP RS11 was in a deadline with a broken crankshaft. Two photos taken at Iroquois Jct, IL:
And this is the last photo that I could find of the KB&S 318 taken in 2004:
It was scrapped that same year. Sad way for this NP RS11 to meet the end.
