BN 1764
This BN 1764 is actually the second GP9 that carried this number. The first BN 1764 was former GN GP9 691 that was wrecked and destroyed at Sheffels, MT 5-11-71 and scrapped. From what I understand this BN 1764 was wearing GN's Big Sky Blue when it was wrecked.
The second BN 1764 came about as a result of America's Bicentennial when BN painted two units red, white and blue. U30C 5325 was repainted and renumbered 1776 ifor the event. BN already had a 1776, former GN GP9 703 so it needed to be renumbered and as number 1764 was vacant the BN 1776 was renumbered in 1974 to BN 1764. Unlike the first 1864 which was never painted BN green, this 1764 already was when renumbered.
GN 703 was wearing GN's original "Empire Builder" scheme at the time of the BN merger in March of 1970. Here is a photo from rrpicturearchives showing the GN 703 in 1971 after the BN merger.
Eventually GN 703 was renumbered to BN 1776 and repainted to BN green before November 1974 when the renumbering to the second BN 1764 occurred.
As the BN 1764 I saw this GP9 only once and that was at Sandpoint, ID on 5-8-86 leading the Troy Turn.with units 1764/2221 (GP9/GP30), leaving Sandpoint westbound at 09:05 AM.
And here is a roster photo of the BN 1764 at Sandpoint, ID the same morning.
The BN 1764 remained in active service until 1992 when BN retired the GP9. There is no other info on the disposition of the BN 1764 but it is likely to have been scrapped soon after.
