BN 2212
BN 2212 was built by EMD as GN 3012 in May of 1963. The seventeen GP30's GN purchased were numbered 3000-3016 and all were from the same 1963 order and delivered in simplified orange and green.
Looking over my roster notes I never saw the GN 3012 before the BN March 1970 merger. After the BN merger the GN 3012 was renumbered to BN 2212. I found a few photos of the BN 2212 shortly after the merger from 1971 still in GN orange and green on rrpicturearchives.
Most of the ex-GN GP30's including the 2212 were assigned to Havre, MT for maintenance after the merger so probably did not make many trips to the west coast where Ilived near Seattle. I first noted the 2212 on 1-6-76 at Black River, WA on train 138 with units 2509/2212/6921/6396 (GP35/GP30/SD40-2/SDP40) Interesting that three of the four units are ex-GN!
My only photographs of the 2212 were taken at Interbay, WA 6-28-80.
And also a roster of the BN GP30.
The 2212 looked as if it had recently been repainted, including pain over the class lights.
In August of 1989 the BN 2212 was sent to MK and remanufactured as BN GP39M 2822 and was given a "whitefaced" paint scheme with a large BN emblem on the nose. This interesting photo from 1997 of an eastbound near Yakima, WA on the reopened ex-NP Auburn to Pasco shows the BN 2822 well.
After the 1996 BN merger the BN 2822 was relettered to BNSF 2822 in October 2001. I photographed the BNSF 2822 at Seattle, WA 6-24-09 still in BN green paint.
Sometime around 2014 the BNSF 2822 was repainted into BNSF latest orange and black paint scheme. It has since had the front number boards rebuilt to house PTC which has really changed the former GP30's appearance. This photo of it from 2020 on rrpicturearchives.
Think I liked it better as the BN 2212.
All the photos of the BNSF 2822 have been taken in Minnesota so it appears to be in captive service around Minneapolis.
