BN 5728
Just before the BN merger CB&Q had four GE U33C's on order The four were to be numbered 578-581 but were delivered in BN green and numbered 5725-5728. The 5728 was to be the last of these four built in Feb-Mar 1970. Mississippi St in the Twin Cities Region got these four along with BN ordered 5729-5735 assigned for maintenance.
On 7-7-71 I was at Auburn, WA and saw a westbound off of Stampede Pass arrive at Auburn, WA with units 6612/5728/6438/734 (F45/U33C/SD45/F7A) The U33C was already over a year old at this point.
I took one roster shot oif the 5728 and that was at Interbay, WA on 6-23-77. It had just come in off of Stevens Pass on a westbound freight. Note the odd placement of the battery box door with Burlington Northern spelled out.
The 5728 continued to work in BN freight service until the early 1980's when most if not all of the U33C's were placed in storage. Some were returned to service for short increases in traffic but the end came in 19 86 after 15 years and all of the BN built U33C's were retired and most sent to scrap with apparently the exception of one that went to a coal facility in the east. The 5728 was not so lucky, retired 2/86 and it was scrapped.
