BN 9551


In December of 1994 BN took delivery of a group of 30 new EMD SD70MAC's numbered 9542-9571 for coal train service. All were assigned to Alliance, NE. Two years later on 12-31-96 came the BNSF merger and the BN 9551 was relettered BNSF 9551.

On 6-4-11 I photographed the BNSF 9551 as trailing unit of a DPU set on a northbound BNSF coal train at Centralia, WA. As can be seen, Grinstein paint and a blank nose lacking any markings.

In late 2017 a group of fourteen ex-BN SD70MAC's within the original thirty were retired. These were the BNSF 9551-9564. The 14 were relettered PRLX (Progress Rail) and assigned on short term lease to Norfolk Southern. The 9551 was still in BN Grinstein paint when it left the BNSF roster.
