BN 9276

BN SD60M 9276 was built by EMD in January of 1991 as part of a second order of SD60M's numbered 9250-9298. The second order was different than the first by having two piece windshields verses the three piece the first order had. All 100 were assigned to Glendive, MT along with SD60M 1991 (built at the same time) where the 9276 and the other SD60M's spent most of their time hauling coal trains. In all of my trips to coal country I never did photograph the BN 9276. But there are photos of the BN 9276 on rrpicturearchives:

After the BNSF merger the BN 9276 was photographed May 20, 1999 on Amtrak #3 in New Mexico as seen in this great photo from RailPictures.net:

BN 9276 was finally relettered to BNSF 9276 in April 2001 and repainted the following month in BNSF's H2 paint scheme.

I photographed the BNSF 9276 at Interbay, WA 2-20-02.

BNSF had new EMD SD70ACe's on order for 2008 delivery so the SD60M's were renumbered to the 8100 series. The BNSF 9276 was renumbered to BNSF 8176. I photographed the BNSF 8176 at Seattle, WA 3-9-13.

Another change came in 2014 when BNSF took delivery of new GE ES44C4's numbered in the 8100 series so the SD60M's were renumbered again, this time to the 1400 series. By this time a number of the SD60M's were already off the roster so the remaining SD60M's were renumbered down to fill gaps. Instead of becoming the 1476 the 8176 was renumbered to BNSF 1453.

In 2019 the 1453 was noted as being stored at Commerce, CA and was apparently awaiting installation of PTC equipment. In August 2020 the 1453 was noted at Interbay, again in storage but reactivation would soon come as I have photographed the 1453 numerous times in 2021 including leading trains, most often on Crew 4 between Tacoma and Seattle. Crew 4 almost always rates older power on it and SD60M's quite often making it my favorite train to catch, usually northbound out of Tacoma, WA late morning to early afternoon unless delayed.

My first shot of the 1453 was this backlit image at Argo south of Seattle 7-14-21 as trailing unit on Crew 4.

Backlit or not it was my first photo of the 1453 and I did not know when I would get another. Little did know I'd see it again just four days later.

While at Tacoma, WA 7-18-21 photographing trans what would show up but the 1453 leading a local into the yard along with BNSF 2914. The sun angle was not great but the 1453 was leading so I was happy to see that. First photo is the 1453 from the D street overpass coming out of a yard track to make a double over onto another yard track.

Overhead roster shot looking down on the 1453.

From ground lever the 1453/2914 backing up under the D street overpass.

And back up onto the D street overpass for one last detail shot showing the nose of the 1453.

Fast forward to Sunday 8-29-21. I had yet to select a subject for that weeks BN Tribute so I decided to let Crew 4 decide. If Crew 4 had an ex-BN unit leading that would be the BN Tribute. I picked a fairly scenic location at Stewart between Puyallup and Tacoma, WA and waited. At 1:23 PM the wait ended with Crew 4 coming around the curve with SD60M 1453 leading 2590/291/2609.

The 1453 may look old and tired in well worn H2 paint but it continues to soldier on and looks great leading trains on the BNSF.
