BN 7241

N SD40-2 7241 was part of a group of SD40-2's built in early 1980 numbered 7236-7291. It was assigned to Alliance, NE after delivery working in coal train service. My notes show I first saw the 7241 on 8-25-80 at Interbay yard in north Seattle. No photos of it though.

There is a good photo of the 7241 on rrpicturearchives at Gillette, WY on a coal train from March 1980:

Four years later on 6-14-84 the 7241 was the trailing unit on a westbound empty coal train that had left Brainerd, MN headed towards Staples when about 01:00 AM the train struck an eastbound coal load head on. Three crewman were killed and three more injured. A lap order had been issued to both trains by a dispatcher in error with the result being two trains on the same track at the same time. All the locomotives involved were destroyed.

These are the two trains involved and locomotives destroyed:

BN 6760 West 6760/6765/7241 (SD40-2/SD40-2/SD40-2)
