BN 7029

BN SD40-2 7029 was the first of a 40 unit EMD SD40-2 order built during 1978 numbered 7029-7048, 8009-8029. The 7029 was assigned to Havre, MT for maintenance.

I first noted the 7029 on 1-19-80 at the ex-GN Interbay engine facility in north Seattle..

I got my only photo of the 7029 leading a westbound grain train on the MRL near Toston, MT 5-31-92.

After the BNSF merger the BN 7029 was restencilled BNSF 7029 in May of 2002 and continued to wear the original BN paint scheme. During 3-23-09 the 7029 was renumbered to BNSF 1774 to make way for new BNSF GE's that would occupy the 7000 series numbers.. Photos of it on rrpicturearchicves as the 1774 show it still in BN green and at Tulsa, OK from 2009 through 2016 where it ended up at Topeka, KS and the first photos of it in fresh orange and black BNSF paint were at Spokane, WA in May of 2018 which also showed it with rebuilt number board extensions for PTC gear.

On a recent trip through Eastern Washington I photographed the BNSF 1774 leading the Lind Turn into Cheney, WA on the ex-NP 9-12-18 with BNSF SD60M 1412, both former BN units.

So it appears that for now the ex-BN 7029 is going to be spending some time in the Northwest.
