BN 6383

BN 6383 is an EMD SD40-2 built in April 1974 as part of a 10 unit order for the BN numbered 6376-6385. All 10 were assigned to Havre, MT when delivered.

My first time seeing the 6383 was on 6-3-74 when train #77 came into Interbay with the 6383/6454/5702/1795 (SD40-2/SD45/U33C/GP9)

One trip I remember seeing the 6383 was in Montana during the early years of MRL when it led a train I chased out of Missoula on 6-7-89 with this photo at Gold Creek, MT a representative of that chase.

The 6383 was later repainted into the whitefaced BN scheme and I caught it leading a hot TOFC train over Providence Hill on 7-12-97 early in the BNSF era.

Eventually the 6383 was relettered for BNSF but was never repainted keeping the BN whitefaced scheme. It appears I do not have any BNSF 6383 photos but there are a number on RR Picture Archives.

It appears that the BNSF 6383 was in and out of storage quite a bit. Info received on the LocoNotes website says BNSF 6383 was re-numbered to BNSF 1831 on 7-13-09. Further, the 1831 was probably re-activated at Havre 4-20-11 and soon made its way to Pasco, WA where I saw it on 7-30-11, still wearing the same paint job I saw on the 6383 back in 1997!

While it looks like a good candidate for a future BNSF paint job it's also nice to know it is still running on the BNSF today.
