BN 2096

BN GP38-2 2096 was built by EMD in November of 1974. BN's second order of GP38-2's came in 1974 and were numbered 2088-2109. The first order delivered in 1972 was numbered 2078-2087.

It took four years after delivery before first catching the 2096 and that was on southbound train 139 with units 4257/1980/821/2096 (C425/GP9/F9B/GP38-2) on 2-28-78.

On 5-6-78 I photographed the 2096 leading train 148 with 2096/610/676/644/602 at South Seattle, WA headed for Interbay. All those f-units were ex-GN.

Here is a roster shot of the 2096 the same day at South Seattle.
The BN 2096 was relettered to BNSF 2096 in December 2001 but was not repainted, keeping the BN green paint. I photographed the BNSF 2096 switching at South Seattle, WA on 5-4-18.
17 years after getting BNSF lettering and still green. On Friday 7-14-23 while passing through Stacy Street Yard in Seattle I found the BNSF 2096 again, and still wearing BN green!

The BN paint is a bit worn but still looks good on this nearly 50 year old locomotive! Will it ever get BNSF paint? Kind of doubtful for a locomotive this old but you never know. The fact it is still in service, and still in BN green is amazing enough!
