BN 4002

BN 4002 was the third of 54 cabless GE B30-7A's built in June 1982 for the Burlington Northern. After being delivered to the BN the 4002 went into the general freight pool seeing frequent service between Northtown and Seattle.

I first saw the 4002 on 7-1-82 at Lincoln, NE while an a trip to Kansas it was sitting in the engine facility along with sister B30-7A's 4003 and 4012. During 1990-1991 all of the B30-7A's were overhauled by GE in Montreal, Quebec and a fresh paint job went with the work after which they returned to service.

Six years after the rebuild I photographed the 4002 at Interbay, WA 12-2-97 awaiting servicing. This was after the BNSF merger took place but it is still looking like a BN unit.

About a year later In December of 1998 BN began to return the B30-7A's to the lesser and the 4000-4010 were some of the first to go going to NREX. Apparently a number of B30-7A's including the 4002 went to Brazil and joined the roster of ALL. There are no photos of the 4002 in Brazil so do not know if it was placed in service as is, rebuilt with a cab or used as a parts source for the many C30-7's that went o Brazil as well. But it would be interesting to find out.
